Carrie Underwood grew up in the small town of Checotah, Okla., where she began singing in church at the age of 3. As a teen, Underwood nearly signed with Capital Records, but the deal fell through at the last minute. She went on to graduate from Checotah High School as her class salutatorian in 2001, before enrolling at Northeastern State University. In 2006, she graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in mass communication, with an emphasis in journalism.
While she remained committed to her studies, Underwood never stopped her passion for singing. During her senior year of college, she heard about the auditions for the 2005 season of "American Idol" and decided to try out for the show in St. Louis, Mo. She would go on to secure a spot in the finals, where she squared off against southern rocker Bo Bice. In the end, Underwood would emerge as the winner, landing the recording contract that had previously eluded her.
Following her victory, Underwood released her debut album, "Some Hearts," in November, 2005. Behind such hit singles as "Jesus Take the Wheel," "Inside Your Heaven" and "Before He Cheats," the album was an immediate hit and launched Underwood into superstardom. Her debut was the biggest of any country artist since the advent of the SoundScan system in 1990, and she also racked up two Grammy Awards, including best new artist.
Underwood followed with her 2007 sophomore release, "Carnival Ride," which again debuted at the top of the country and Billboard charts and proved that the pop-country artist was here to stay.
