Born in San Diego, Calif., Cameron Diaz left school at the age of 16 to become a model. Working for the Elite Agency, she traveled the world for the next five years, landing commercial work for such brands as Coke, Nivea, and L.A. Gear.
Upon returning to California at the age of 21, Diaz landed her breakthrough role opposite Jim Carrey in the 1994 fantasy film “The Mask.” Her sex appeal would land her several roles as she went on to appear in more than a dozen movies over the next six years. She started by honing her acting skills in such low-budget indie films as “The Last Supper” (1995), “She's the One” (1996) and “Feeling Minnesota” (1996).
Diaz would return to the mainstream with 1997’s “My Best Friend's Wedding,” in which she more than held her own against veteran star Julia Roberts. She then leaped into superstardom the following year, starring opposite Ben Stiller in the Farrelly brothers' box-office smash “There's Something About Mary.”
After her career was firmly established, Diaz went on to star in both serious and comedic roles, including “Being John Malkovich” (1999), “Any Given Sunday” (1999), “Charlie’s Angels” (2000), “Shrek” (2001) and “Gangs of New York” (2002).
