Natalie Portman, Colin Firth Claim Top SAG Awards
LOS ANGELES — Natalie Portman and Colin Firth won top acting honors at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night, adding further to their momentum heading into the Oscars.
'Up in the Air,' 'Precious' and 'Inglourious Basterds' Top SAG Award Nominations
LOS ANGELES — Up in the Air, Precious and Inglourious Basterds each picked up three nominations to lead the field of contenders for the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, organizers announced Thursday.
Up in the Air star George Clooney received a lead actor nomination. Others nominated in the category were Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Colin Firth (A Single Man), Morgan Freeman (Invictus) and Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker).
On the lead actress side, the nominees are Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side), Helen Mirren (The Last Station), Carey Mulligan (An Education), Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) and Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia).
Best overall motion picture cast nominees are An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Nine and Precious.
On the television side, the nominees for best actor in a drama series are Simon Baker (The Mentalist), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Hugh Laurie (House).
Best actress in a drama series nods went to Patricia Arquette (Medium), Glenn Close (Damages), Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU), Holly Hunter (Saving Grace), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) and Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer).
For best actor in a comedy series, the nominees are Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Steve Carell (The Office), Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Tony Shalhoub (Monk) and Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men).
The best actress in a comedy series category features nominees Christina Applegate (Samantha Who?), Toni Collette (United States of Tara), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine).
The SAG Awards will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on Jan. 23, 2010 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, 7 p.m. CT, and 6 p.m. MT from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center.

'Slumdog,' '30 Rock,' 'Mad Men' Top 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards
LOS ANGELES — "Slumdog Millionaire" took another step forward in the race for a best picture Oscar, winning the top prize of best ensemble cast at Sunday's 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The acting categories, however, appear to be a bit more wide open. Meryl Streep won outstanding female actress actors for "Doubt," a victory that appeared to catch the star by surprise.
"I didn't even buy a dress," admitted Streep, who watched Kate Winslet win best actress honors a week earlier at the Golden Globes. "I'm really, really shocked."
The same held true in the outstanding male actor category. Sean Penn walked away a winner for his leading role in "Milk," a week after Mickey Rourke took the title at the Golden Globes.
For the second straight week, Heath Ledger earned a posthumous trophy for his role as the Joker in "The Dark Knight."
I'm quite emotional," said castmate Gary Oldman, who accepted Ledger's best supporting actor award. "He was an extraordinary young man with an extraordinary talent, and it is wonderful that you have acknowledged that."
Winslet, meanwhile, won best supporting actress for her turn in "The Reader."
On the television side, NBC's "30 Rock" registered a clean sweep, winning best comedy series and having the show's two stars, Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey, take home top actor and actress honors, respectively.
The hit AMC series "Mad Men" won for best drama series.

'Doubt' Tops Nominees for 15th Annual SAG Awards
HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — The Catholic-film drama "Doubt" scored five nods to lead the field of nominees announced Thursday for the 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.
"Doubt," the story of a Catholic priest and nun who battle over charges of sexual abuse, will compete in the category of best ensemble cast against "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Frost/Nixon," "Milk" and "Slumdog Millionaire."
The film also generated several nods for its cast, including Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis.
Streep picked up a lead-actress nomination, where she will compete against Kate Winslet ("Revolutionary Road"), Anne Hathaway ("Rachel Getting Married"), Angelina Jolie ("Changeling") and Melissa Leo ("Frozen River").
The field nominated for lead actor is comprised of Richard Jenkins ("The Visitor"), Frank Langella ("Frost/Nixon"), Sean Penn ("Milk"), Brad Pitt ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") and Mickey Rourke ("The Wrestler").
The late Heath Ledger, who died in January from an accidental prescription drug overdose, moved another step closer to a potential Oscar nod. Ledger earned a supporting-actor nomination for his critically-acclaimed turn as the Joker in "The Dark Knight."
In the area of television, the nominees for best cast in a drama are "Boston Legal," "Dexter," "House," "Mad Men" and "The Closer." The field for best comedy cast will be a showdown between "30 Rock," "Desperate Housewives," "Entourage," "The Office" and "Weeds."
The SAG Awards will be held on Jan. 25.

Last night's Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles gave "The Sopranos" one final curtain call, with stars James Gandolfini winning Best Actor in a Drama Series and co-star Edie Falco earning Best Actress honors.
