Mischa Barton Planning Career Change

By Chloe Bunker on October 20, 2009

NEW YORK — Mischa Barton is taking a break from television after her new series The Beautiful Life was canceled after just two episodes.

"I think I need to back away from the whole TV approach," the 23-year-old actress told People at Monday night's Whitney Museum Gala in New York City. "That whole world of network television, probably isn't, for me, a good idea now. I need to start reading for more serious roles."

Last month, The CW halted production on TBL after the series drew just 1.1 million viewers in its second episode. The program got off to a rocky start when Barton was placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold in July, pushing production back by a week. Barton said she is enjoying her time off and won't be rushing back to work anytime soon.

"It's too early to tell yet," she said of her new project. "I'm passing on all the [early] offers, because that's not the stuff you want to do. I want to go fight for interesting things and look for something that's going to be interesting for me ... as a role."

'The Beautiful Life' Canceled After Two Episodes

By Chloe Bunker on September 26, 2009

LOS ANGELES — Mischa Barton's return to the small screen was a short one.

The CW has canceled "The Beautiful Life: TBL" after just two episodes, Variety reports.

Production on the show was halted on Friday after the series drew just 1.1 million viewers in its second episode.

The network is expected to air reruns of "Melrose Place" in "TBL's" Wednesday night timeslot for the time being.

In an ironic twist, Barton had been rumored for months as a potential castmember on "Melrose" prior to "TBL" coming about. It's likely the former "O.C." star's name will once again be mentioned as a potential resident at "Melrose."

"TBL" was loosely based on executive producer Ashton Kutcher's experiences as a young male model. The short-lived series also starred Corbin Bleu, Benjamin Hollingswoth, Nico Tortorella, Ashley Madekwe, Elle MacPherson and Sara Paxton.

The series got off to a rocky start when Barton was placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold in July, pushing production back by a week.

Mischa Barton Rants About Hospitalization on 'The View'

By Alexis Sezar on September 11, 2009

LOS ANGELES — Mischa Barton may have raised more questions about her recent hospitalization after a bizarre interview on Friday's "The View."

During her appearance, the 23-year-old actress often shifted gears as she tried to explain what led to her being placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold in July.

"I mean, really it was blown out of proportion, so it's kind of silly now to be talking about it because I'm so fine now, but it was really just a bad time for me," Barton told the ABC chatfest. "It was sort of one of those things that was like a perfect storm. Everything happened at once."

When "View" co-host Barbara Walters pointed out that she wasn't exactly placed in a "regular hospital," Barton once again blamed her hospitalization on a dental procedure.

"Right, I mean, it was just ... I was overwhelmed," said Barton. "I had too much work going on. I had a surgery for my wisdom teeth that went really badly. I had been in the hospital. I had two surgeries on my wisdom teeth. I had four taken out and they had gotten it really badly wrong. They had to drill into my jaw and I was just in really excruciating pain."

"I had an infection and a dry socket and I woke up on a Sunday morning and there was no doctor available," she continued. "I was trying to take the minimum amount of pain killers and get through it because I had to go to work soon and I was getting ready to go do this show, 'The Beautiful Life,' and meanwhile I still had a schedule to travel. I was going to Europe. I was going to London. I had things to do and I was prepping to do photo shoots and I was just overwhelmed. I had so much work to do and the surgery had gone so badly for me. And I think that I was just starting to feel completely overwhelmed. It was just too much to have this surgery go so wrong."

Barton's awkward response led to fellow "View" co-host Joy Behar questioning why a psychiatric hospital would handle a case consisting of physical pain.

"When they take you into the hospital for something when it goes really wrong if you're having a meltdown and you say something like 'I feel like I want to die,' ... they start injecting you with things to calm down," Barton explained. "Like I'm petrified of needles. Like absolutely petrified ... you can't come anywhere ... I had my blood drawn once in my life for my insurance."

"Anyway, I got really healthy since then," added Barton. "I've just been doing everything I can to keep my job happy and healthy and I've moved to New York with my two dogs and I have a great apartment I just got."

Mischa Barton Out of Hospital, Eyes Return to Work on 'Beautiful Life'

Mischa Barton, pictures, picture, photos, photo, pics, pic, images, image, hot, sexy, latest, newHOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Mischa Barton is out of the hospital after reportedly being placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold two weeks ago.

Barton's rep told the Associated Press on Monday that the former "O.C." star is making progress in her recovery and plans to return to work soon.

Mischa Barton's Friends Say Actress Struggles with Body Image

By Alexis Sezar on July 22, 2009

LOS ANGELES — Mischa Barton remains hospitalized after being placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold last week, but the former "O.C." star is making progress in her recovery.

While the star's rep, Craig Schneider, would not elaborate on Barton's condition, he did tell Us Weekly that she is "making improvements."

Barton was hospitalized last Wednesday after police were called to her home for a "medical issue." She is currently being treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

While what led to Barton's hospitalization remains a mystery, several of her friends have claimed that the 23-year-old actress struggles with her physical appearance.

"She has big self-esteem issues. ... She hates her legs," one pal told People. "She isn't comfortable with her body. It's been a big source of stress and self-hate."

Last May, Barton's body was a major tabloid story after she was photographed topless on a beach while vacationing in Australia. Several stories followed accusing Barton of having cellulite, which prompted her rep to respond that the photos were doctored.

"She had a big problem with those photos of her cellulite. … She didn't like it," a source tells People. "That just was something that contributed to her spiraling but she didn't do much to fix it because of her partying."

After the cellulite claims were made, Barton took to her blog where she opened up about the controversy and her ensuing weight loss.

"I'm happier and healthier than ever so there is no need to worry about me. Things are really well in Mischa world and I've just been watching what I eat," she wrote. "I still love my pilates and yoga, and have cut back on fatty foods a bit. My time in India and Paris really just helped me lose a little bit of weight but there's nothing drastic going on!"

"I appreciate the concern, I just wish the press wouldn't harbor on it as I think it's very unhealthy for young girls to read about and pay attention to," Barton continued. "To my female fans: Just be happy and secure with yourself and don't let other people's perceptions of you dictate the way you live your life."

Mischa Barton's 'Beautiful Life' Series Postponed

By Erica Bowen on July 20, 2009

LOS ANGELES — Production on Mischa Barton's new series "The Beautiful Life" has been pushed back a week, although the production halt is reportedly not tied to the actress being placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold last Wednesday.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the delay is due to some of the show's sets not being completed on time. Production on the CW series will now begin on July 31, the trade paper said.

Barton, 23, remains hospitalized after police were called to her home last week for a "medical issue." The actress was placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold and is currently being treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

There is still no word on when Barton might be released from the hospital.

Barton's hospitalization caused her to miss the premiere of her new film, "Homecoming," held last Thursday in New York City.

"I'm very concerned about [Mischa]," the film's producer, Austin Stark, told People on Monday. "First and foremost, we hope she gets better. I don't know exactly what happened ... I wish she wasn't going through the turmoil that she is right now."

Barton was also hospitalized in May 2007 after she became sick at a Memorial Day barbeque with friends. At the end of the year, the former "O.C." star hit a lowpoint when she was arrested in West Hollywood for DUI, marijuana possession and driving without a license. Barton, who was sentenced to 36 months probation, alcohol education classes and a fine, later revealed that she entered rehab shortly after her arrest.

"I wanted to prove to the court that I would take it completely seriously, so I went to rehab to prove I was sober," she told the U.K.'s Marie Claire in November. "It really helped in getting the more serious aspects of my case dropped because, you know, that's what they want to hear; you're not an alcoholic and you don't have a problem. So I did it in the most low-key way possible — I didn't make a fuss about it and I didn't tell a lot of my friends. I just did the program and got through it."

Barton's return to television in "Beautiful Life" revolves around a group of models living together in a coed residence in New York.  The series, which is executive produced by Ashton Kutcher, is scheduled to premiere on Sept. 16.

Mischa Barton's Hospitalization Remains a Mystery

By Amber Sterling on July 17, 2009

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Mischa Barton was placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold on Wednesday, but the development isn't a complete surprise to those closest to the star.

"She has been dealing with a lot of personal issues," a friend of Barton's tells People. "I don't know if she really ever gave up some of the bad habits that had gotten out of control a couple years back."

Some of those "bad habits" could go back to when the 23-year-old Barton was hospitalized in May 2007 after she became sick at a Memorial Day barbeque with friends.

So I did it in the most low-key way possible — I didn't make a fuss about it and I didn't tell a lot of my friends. I just did the program and got through it."

What led to Barton's latest hospitalization remains a mystery to nearly everyone, including the producer of her new film, "Homecoming."

"I haven't been able to [speak with her,] I think she's under lock and key right now," producer Bingo Gubelmann told Access Hollywood at the film's premiere Thursday night in New York City.

While Gubelmann expressed regret that Barton's hospitalization caused her to miss the film's premiere, he said that wouldn't keep him from casting her again in the future.

"She was so professional," he said of Barton's work on the film. "I would definitely work with her again, no matter what. No matter how this goes down."
