Sports Journalist Jaymee Sire a Fan Favorite - page 3

By Jeff Ferrantino on January 31, 2006

Jaymee Sire, pictures, picture, photos, photo, pics, pic, images, image, hot, sexyIt goes without saying that Sire faces her fair share of challenges, being both young and a woman working in a world dominated by men.

"Expectations are set very high for women," she says. "There's an audience out there waiting to say, 'Oh, she's no good, she's an idiot.' There's definitely a double standard and sometimes that's unfortunate.

"You have to make sure that you earn people's respect. A lot of men in the industry are buddy-buddy with athletes and they have relationships that I'll just never have, because I need to protect my reputation. It's just something that comes with the territory."

In fact, Sire speaks about a time when she received a call from a local reporter telling her of a rumor circulating around a team locker room. The call came shortly after she landed in San Diego, and it wasn't exactly the warm welcome that she had in mind.

"It's hard when you hear stuff like that and there's absolutely no truth to it," she says.

Despite the obvious hurdles, Sire moves onward and upward in the broadcasting world, knowing that there are many hills to climb and many challenges to be met. In addition to Stark, she admires the work of several other female sportscasters including, Michelle Tafoya, Pam Oliver and Linda Cohn. This past preseason, she gained her first experience as a sideline reporter while working on the Chargers pre-season broadcasts.

"I think that's something that I definitely want to explore," Sire says of working as a sideline reporter. "I really liked it a lot. At the same time, I really like reporting and meeting new people and telling their stories. I love [ESPN's] 'Outside the Lines' and [HBO's] 'Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel'. I'll always enjoy in-depth feature stories that are really well done."

Sire's reporting skills have already earned her a Golden Mike Award from the Radio and Television News Association of Southern California. While she has worked in a major media market for 2 ½ years now, she is still very young and the sky would appear to be the limit for her. When asked what the future has in store for her, Sire speaks rather freely for someone has been known to carry out a plan or two in the past.

"I've always been open to wherever the job takes me," she says. "I definitely see myself moving to the network-level at some point — whether it be as a sideline reporter or something else. Wherever the job takes me, one thing's for certain, I will never settle. I am fortunate to be one of the few people in the world to absolutely LOVE what I do. When it stops being fun, maybe I'll try something else, but right now, I'm having a blast!"
