Denise Richards spent her early years in Illinois before moving with her family to San Diego, Calif. at the age of 12. She graduated from El Camino High School in 1989 and soon turned her attention towards a modeling career. After a brief stint in New York, she relocated to Los Angeles and began to focus on acting.
Richards would make her debut in 1990 with a small role on the television series "Life Goes On." She would continue to pick up bit parts over the next several years, appearing on such shows as "Saved by the Bell," "Married With Children," "Doogie Howser, MD," "Beverly Hills, 90210" and "Seinfeld." Richards then caught her first breaks in 1993, landing a role as Ben Affleck's girlfriend in the short-lived series "Against the Grain," as well as her first film role in "Loaded Weapon."
In 1997, Richards increased her notoriety with a role in the sci-fi action film "Starship Troopers." She would then achieve fame by starring in 1998’s "Wild Things," a cult favorite in which Richards engages in a notorious lesbian love scene with co-star Neve Campbell.
With her Hollywood sex symbol status firmly established, Richards would go on to star in such films as "Drop Dead Gorgeous" (1999), "The World Is Not Enough" (1999), "Undercover Brother" (2002) and "Love Actually" (2003). She also landed her own reality series on E! in 2008.
