"The Hurt Locker," a low-budget indie drama about an American bomb-disposal unit in Iraq, won best picture and best director honors for Kathryn Bigelow at the star-studded event. Other notable winners at the Critics' Choice Awards included James Cameron's sci-fi epic "Avatar," which won six times, including best action movie.

The Critics' Choice Awards, organized by the 235 members of the Broadcast Film Critics Association in the United States and Canada, have established a reputation as the leading barometer of Oscar success.
