NEW YORK — Alex Rodriguez admits he's seen brighter days, following a tumultuous past two weeks in which his wife filed for divorce and he found himself in the middle of an alleged affair with Madonna.
"Times are a bit difficult, they are challenging times, but I'll get through them," he told The Insider Monday night at his Major League Baseball All-Star Game party, held at Jay-Z's 40-40 club in New York City.
"The support of the New York fans has been incredible," the slugger added to journalist Pat O'Brien.
A-Rod's wife, Cynthia Rodriguez, with whom he has two young children, filed for divorce last week after five years of marriage. The filing came on the heels of several tabloid reports linking the New York Yankees star to the "Material Girl" herself.
"She feels that she has exhausted every opportunity to salvage the marriage, and that Alex has emotionally abandoned her and the children and has left her with no choice but to divorce him," her attorney, Maurice Kutner, told the Miami Herald after the filing.
When asked if he's read anything in the press lately, Rodriguez said, "None of it. Zero, zero. Thank you."
Earlier Monday, Rodriguez was extremely gracious and forthcoming as he met with the media as part of the annual All-Star Game festivities.
"You have to take the good with the bad and not take yourself too seriously," he told reporters, according to the New York Post.
"Look, everyone has distractions," he continued. "Everyone goes through personal issues. Mine are on the front page of the papers. I'm fine with it. ... You have to deal with that, challenging times."
"I've learned to put whatever issues are on the front page in one small box over here," he added, gesturing an imaginary container. "And baseball has been a great vehicle for me to keep my mind on what I love to do most, to play baseball."
