HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — The son of one of Hollywood's biggest stars is making a name for himself.
Jaden Smith, whose father Will is one of the most sought-after actors in the business, has been tabbed for the lead role in a remake of the hit 1984 film "The Karate Kid," according to Variety.
The new installment will include certain elements of the original film and begin shooting in Beijing and other cities next year, the trade publication says.
The original "Karate Kid" starred Ralph Macchio as a teen who learns to defend himself from bullies by learning martial arts from an eccentric mentor, played by the late Pat Morita. The role earned Morita a best supporting actor Oscar nomination.
The film led to several sequels, including 1994's "The Next Karate Kid," which launched the career of eventual Oscar-winner Hillary Swank.
Jerry Weintraub, the man behind the original franchise, is set to return as producer, Variety says.
The 10-year-old Smith, who practices martial arts, made his feature film debut by starring alongside his father in the 2006 hit "The Pursuit of Happyness." He will next appear on the big screen in "The Day the Earth Stood Still."
