HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - "The Great Debaters" topped the list of nominees announced Tuesday for the 39th Annual NAACP Image Awards.
"The Great Debaters," a film based on the real-life victories of a black debating team in the 1930s, received eight nominations, including outstanding motion picture and both outstanding actor and outstanding director for Denzel Washington. The movie also received three supporting-actor nominations for Forest Whitaker, Nate Parker and Denzel Whitaker.
Other best-picture nominees included "American Gangster," "I Am Legend," "Talk to Me" and "Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?"
Additional outstanding-actor nominees were Columbus Short for "Stomp the Yard," Don Cheadle for "Talk to Me," Terrence Howard for "Pride" and Will Smith for "I Am Legend."
Nominees for outstanding actress were Jurnee Smollett for "The Great Debaters," Angelina Jolie for "A Mighty Heart," Halle Berry for "Things We Lost In the Fire," Jill Scott for "Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?" and Taraji P. Henson for "Talk To Me."
On the television side, "30 Rock," "Everybody Hates Chris," "Girlfriends," "House of Payne" and "Ugly Betty" garnered nominations for comedy.
"Grey's Anatomy," "House," "K-Ville," "Lincoln Heights" and "The Unit" were named in the drama series category.
The NAACP Image Awards honor projects and individuals who promote diversity in the arts in motion pictures, television, recording and literature.
A special tribute will be paid to Stevie Wonder at this year's ceremony when the NAACP presents him with its Hall of Fame award.
The Los Angeles event will be broadcast Feb. 14 live on Fox.
