HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — The tabloids have found their new favorite friend — Woody Harrelson.
Woody was on hand Monday night to help present Javier Bardem with the Montecito Award at the annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and he confirmed a rumor in the process — Bardem is dating Penelope Cruz.
"I can't believe the luck this guy has," Harrelson said of his "No Country for Old Men" co-star during his speech. "You look at his bio, and one page is just describing his journey and then the second page is just all of the awards he's won .... And not to mention, I found this out last night, too — he's going out with Penelope Cruz."
When Woody mentioned Cruz's name, the crowd screamed and roared as the 38-year-old Bardem laughed and placed his head in his hands.
Rumors about a romance between Bardem and Cruz first started last summer. They were later spotted on a beach in the Maldives in the fall, but they've managed to keep their relationship quiet until the famous "Cheers" bartender got involved.
After the laughter ended, Bardem, who won best supporting actor at last Sunday's Screen Actor Guild Awards, showed his appreciation for the night's honor.
Said Bardem: "When I saw the invitation from my agent, I said 'I don't get it.' When I saw the theater it was huge — I thought it was going to be smaller. When I saw the crowd, I said 'I don't get it. Why me? Why? Why? Why me, tonight?' And then I said 'You know what? I don't want to know!' Instead I receive this as the greatest honor of my life."
