Melanie Chisholm Pregnant with First Baby

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Melanie Chisholm is spicing up her life with a baby.

The 34-year-old Spice Girls star announced on her Web site Friday that she is pregnant and expecting her first child with her longtime boyfriend, property developer Thomas Starr.

"Some happy news," wrote Sporty Spice. "I can now announce that Tom and I are expecting a baby and we are very happy."

The pregnancy news means a growing Spice Girls family, as fellow bandmates — Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton — all have children of their own.

Rumors began swirling last week that Chisholm was expecting when she wore a baggy dress at a Liverpool show.

"As I'm sure you'll understand, we needed time to wait for results and tell our families," she explained.

In addition to the excitement of motherhood, Mel C. says she's anxious to begin recording her new solo release.

"I will be taking it easy but am also excited to start writing for the fifth album," she said. "I'll need some time off to be a mum but, before you know it, we'll be back."
