HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Jessica Simpson admits she changed her outlook on men following her 2005 split from ex-husband Nick Lachey.
"I was going through a lot of pain," the 28-year-old star confesses in the September issue of Elle magazine. "I didn't try anything to change my life other than dating different types of guys and conforming to their worlds. I thought I had to be artsier, more intellectual."
Simpson's most-public romance after divorcing her "Newlyweds" co-star was with fellow singer John Mayer, a person she still holds in the highest regard.
"John believed in the Jessica Simpson that's within," she explains of their relationship, which ended last spring. "He cherished our love. He helped make me the woman I am today. John is going to be an amazing man for someone, but I know that I was supposed to be with someone else."
Simpson has since found love in the arms of an NFL star in her home state of Texas — Tony Romo. While the couple has endured plenty of ups and downs, Simpson didn't shy from gushing about her beau.
"Most of the guys I dated were captivated by my heart but they had different ways of trying to get to me," she tells the magazine. "Tony understands me. He appreciates my talent. He's the first person I've spiritually connected with."
"I'm a girl that loves to be in love," she adds. "I love love!"
Simpson also says the Dallas Cowboys quarterback is quick to pick her up when she's feeling down. The pop star has been transitioning into a country career and recently endured several boos while performing in Randall, Wis.
"It's the cutest thing," she says. "He'll say, 'Jessica, 75 percent of the comments about your new single ['Come On Over'] are favorable.' "
