HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — The father of actress Hayden Panettiere is downplaying his arrest early Monday morning for allegedly striking his wife.
Alan Panettiere, who was arrested on a felony count of domestic violence around 3 a.m. after he allegedly struck his wife Lesley in the cheek, tells Extra that the whole incident was "a misunderstanding." He was released from jail Monday afternoon after posting a $50,000 bail.
Sunday evening began with the 18-year-old "Heroes" star hosting the Whaleman Foundation Benefit, in which her family attended. The event was held at Eva Longoria's Beso restaurant in Hollywood, Calif.
The star's parents reportedly got into an argument upon their arrival home when Panettiere's father accused his wife of "hanging" with someone at the party and "disrespecting" him, according to TMZ.
Police officials tell TMZ that Panettiere's mother had visible marks on her face and she was advised by paramedics to seek treatment at a hospital, but she refused.
Panettiere's parents spoke with Extra on Monday, saying "nothing actually happened."
"In fact, Lesley wasn't even aware that Skip had been arrested," explains Extra host Mario Lopez. "Hayden found out about her dad's arrest when he called her from jail. They love each other very much and want everyone to know that the matter was completely blown out of proportion."
