MIAMI — Cynthia Rodriguez says she's still in love with her husband, baseball star Alex Rodriguez, but she "refuses to go there again" after the slugger's alleged past infidelities.
Making her first public comments since filing for divorce on Monday, Rodriguez also set the record straight on her escape to Paris last week, which led to several tabloid reports claiming she was having her own affair with rocker Lenny Kravitz.
"Not one word of those stories is true," she told New York Post columnist Cindy Adams. "I never before in all my married life together ever went away without my husband or family. Not once in 13 years."
"I did not spend one dollar shopping in Paris," the 35-year-old continued. "I did not go to super-fancy expensive restaurants. I did not go to any spa. I didn't do one thing. I spent the most innocent four days with my children's godparents, who are as close to us as family. My husband and I were already into our problems and I didn't know where to go, what to do. I needed to think. To clear my head."
Rodriguez said that her husband supported her decision to leave town, that he even "encouraged it," after news of his alleged affair with Madonna made headlines all over the world.
"I needed to get away. With clear-headed friends. To breathe. To think how I'm going to handle my kids. I just needed a little time," she told Adams.
Rodriguez married the New York Yankees All-Star in Nov. 2002. They have two children, Natasha Alexander, 3 and Ella Alexander, who was born April 21. She and the children are currently staying in Miami with family, and her return to New York City is unclear at this time. Her biggest challenge is how to respond to her oldest child, who is curious about her father's whereabouts and saying, "I miss my daddy," Adams says.
"Mine's a close-knit family," Rodriguez said of her current pain. "Never one divorce on my side. My parents, aunts, uncles are devastated."
