LOS ANGELES — Charlie Sheen's arrest on Christmas Day may have been prompted by his wife Brooke Mueller's wishes for a divorce.
"Brooke asked Charlie for a separation and divorce. This caused his temper to flair resulting in the incident that landed him in jail," a source tells People magazine.
Sheen, 44, was arrested when the couple got into a domestic dispute while spending the holiday in Aspen, Colo. He was charged with second-degree assault and menacing, both felonies, along with criminal mischief, a misdemeanor. The actor was later released after posting $8,500 bond and is due in court on Feb. 8, 2010.
TMZ claims that Mueller, 32, was legally drunk when she placed the 911 call that eventually landed Sheen in jail. On the call, Mueller tells the dispatcher that Sheen is threatening her with a knife.
"My husband had me with a knife," she said. "I was scared for my life and he threatened me."
Mueller and Sheen, who tied the knot in May 2008, welcomed their first children, twin boys, in March. They are currently living apart and a source tells People that a divorce may be forthcoming.
"Brooke and Charlie still love each other, but they are very different," said the insider. "[They] will make their best effort at counseling, [but] divorce is definitely a possibility."
