HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Hayden Panettiere is defending her controversial new movie, Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy.
The Lifetime film, premiering Monday, poses the question of whether Knox (Panettiere), the Seattle honors student accused of murdering her college roommate Meredith Kercher in 2007 with her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and acquaintance Rudy Guede, actually committed the crime or was herself a victim.
"The way in which this film is done, it's done very tastefully," the 21-year-old actress tells Access Hollywood. "It's done in a very classy way, there's nothing in it that would incriminate her, nothing that would sway opinions in court, when it came to her appeal."
Referred to as "Foxy Knoxy" by the press and her Italian prosecutor Guiliani Mignini, Knox was painted as an oversexed, remorseless killer during her two-year trial leading up to her conviction and subsequent sentencing to 26 years in jail.
So does Panettiere believe the woman she portrayed is innocent?
"I believe that she very well could be," said the former Heroes star. "I believe that she very well could have been there, there's a lot of sides of the story... there are things that just don't add up.
"The fact that there are three people involved here, the fact that nobody has pointed fingers at anyone... I don't think anyone will know, unless one of them comes out and says, 'I did it.' "
